iOS 27: 15 Settings to Change First for Better Battery, Privacy and Siri AI

Just installed iOS 27? Do not spend the first hour hunting for every new animation. The smarter move is to review the settings that control privacy, battery use, notifications, Siri AI, backups and mobile data. A major iPhone update can introduce new features while also carrying forward old permissions and preferences that no longer match how you use your phone.

This guide focuses on the settings that matter most after updating. Not every item below is brand-new in iOS 27; several are long-standing controls that are worth re-checking after a major release. Apple says iOS 27 is available starting September 14 and introduces Siri AI alongside other system changes. If you have not updated yet, start with our iOS 27 compatibility, features and update guide.

The 15 iOS 27 settings worth checking first

  1. Siri AI language and access
  2. Apple Intelligence and Siri permissions
  3. Location Services
  4. App Tracking Transparency
  5. Photos access for individual apps
  6. Background App Refresh
  7. Battery charging optimization
  8. Always-On Display and brightness
  9. Notification permissions
  10. Focus modes
  11. Cellular data by app
  12. iCloud Backup
  13. Safari privacy and security
  14. Find My and device protection
  15. Emergency SOS and Medical ID

1. Check Siri AI language and availability

Siri AI is one of the headline additions in iOS 27, but availability depends on the device, language and region. Apple says the initial rollout is in English, with additional languages following. Open the Siri or Apple Intelligence settings area and confirm the language you actually use. If your preferred language is not supported yet, do not switch your entire phone to another language only to force a feature you may not need.

2. Review Apple Intelligence and Siri permissions

AI assistants become useful when they can work with personal context, but that also means permissions deserve a deliberate review. Look at which apps and system features Siri can learn from or interact with. Keep access where it improves your workflow and disable it where the benefit is unclear. The right setup is not “everything on” or “everything off”; it is the minimum access needed for the features you genuinely use.

3. Audit Location Services instead of leaving every app on “Always”

Location access is one of the easiest places to reduce unnecessary background activity. In Privacy & Security, review apps one by one. Navigation, ride-hailing and weather apps may need location access, but many apps work perfectly well with “While Using” or no location permission at all. Also check whether precise location is necessary; an app that only needs your city usually does not need your exact position.

4. Revisit App Tracking Transparency

If you care about cross-app advertising profiles, review tracking permissions after the upgrade. Apps can change over time, and a permission you accepted months ago may no longer make sense. Limiting unnecessary tracking does not block ads, but it can reduce how much activity is linked across companies and apps.

5. Limit Photos access to what each app needs

Many social, shopping and editing apps ask for broad photo-library access even when you only upload a few images. Use limited or selected-photo access where practical. This is especially useful for banking, marketplace and utility apps that need an occasional upload but do not need to browse your entire library.

6. Trim Background App Refresh

Background App Refresh can keep information current, but allowing every app to refresh can waste battery and data. Messaging, navigation and cloud-storage apps may benefit; games, rarely used stores and one-off utilities often do not. Disabling refresh for low-priority apps is one of the simplest ways to reduce unnecessary background work without crippling the phone.

7. Check charging optimization before judging battery life

After a major update, an iPhone may spend time indexing photos, rebuilding search data and updating apps. That can temporarily increase battery use. Before assuming iOS 27 has permanently reduced battery life, give the phone time to settle and review battery settings. Keep optimized charging or any available charge-limit feature enabled if it suits your routine, especially if your phone remains plugged in for long periods.

8. Tune Always-On Display and brightness

On supported iPhones, Always-On Display is useful but not essential. If battery endurance matters more than glanceable information, test the phone with it disabled. Also keep auto-brightness enabled unless you have a specific reason not to. Manually running a display brighter than necessary is a reliable way to shorten battery life regardless of the iOS version.

9. Clean up notifications aggressively

A new operating system is a good excuse to reset notification habits. Keep immediate alerts for people and genuinely time-sensitive services. For shopping apps, games, promotions and low-priority news, consider summaries or disable alerts entirely. Fewer interruptions make the new interface feel faster because you spend less time responding to noise.

10. Rebuild Focus modes around your real schedule

Focus modes become powerful when they are automatic. Create separate work, sleep and personal profiles with only the apps and contacts that should interrupt you. If you already had Focus configured, check that schedules, allowed contacts and app filters carried over the way you expected after updating.

11. Stop low-value apps using cellular data

Users with limited plans should inspect cellular usage by app. Streaming, cloud photo sync and social video can consume large amounts of data in the background or during casual use. Restricting selected apps to Wi-Fi can prevent surprise data usage without affecting calls, messages or essential services.

12. Confirm iCloud Backup actually completed

Do not assume backup is healthy because the switch is enabled. Open the iCloud backup screen and check the most recent successful backup. A major update is exactly when you want a recoverable copy of important device data. If storage is full, fix that before you need the backup rather than after something goes wrong.

13. Review Safari privacy and security controls

Check Safari settings for fraudulent-site warnings, tracking protection, pop-up behavior and camera, microphone and location permissions. Avoid disabling protections just because a single website behaves badly. If a site requires an unusual permission, grant it only when you understand why it is needed.

14. Make sure Find My is enabled

Find My is easy to forget until a phone is missing. Confirm that your device appears correctly in your Apple account and that the relevant finding features are enabled. Also review your passcode and account security. A modern iPhone with weak account protection is still vulnerable to avoidable loss.

15. Update Emergency SOS and Medical ID

Emergency contacts, allergies and medical information can become outdated. Take two minutes to verify them. It is one of the few settings on your phone that may matter more than battery percentage or an AI feature in a real emergency.

What should you not change immediately?

Avoid copying “battery hacks” that turn off every background service, location feature and push notification. That can make an iPhone last longer while also making it far less useful. Change one group of settings at a time, use the phone normally for a day or two, and judge the result from real battery and usage data.

FAQ

Will changing these settings make iOS 27 faster?

They will not increase the processor speed, but reducing unnecessary background activity, excessive notifications and data use can make everyday operation feel cleaner and more efficient.

Should I disable Siri AI for better battery life?

Not automatically. Use the feature normally first and check Battery settings for actual usage. Disable features because you do not want them or because measured usage is excessive, not because of a blanket internet tip.

How long can battery life fluctuate after an iOS update?

Background indexing, app updates and photo processing can temporarily increase activity after a major update. Give the phone time to complete that work before comparing long-term battery behavior.
