Practical computer troubleshooting
Three checks before changing computer settings
A computer can feel slow, lose its connection or fail an update for reasons that are easy to confuse. Start by saving work, writing down the exact error and identifying whether you use Windows 11 or macOS. These checks are designed to narrow the problem—not to promise a one-click repair.
An update fails or will not finish
Check available storage, the exact update name and any error code. Keep the device connected to reliable power during important updates. If a restart is required, finish saving open work first. For a failed update, compare the message against official documentation rather than repeatedly reinstalling the operating system.
The computer feels unexpectedly slow
Notice whether the slowdown affects every program or just one. On Windows, Task Manager can show which processes are using CPU, memory and disk; on macOS, Activity Monitor serves a similar purpose. High resource use can be temporary during indexing or updating. Avoid deleting system files or installing unknown ‘cleanup’ utilities to guess at the cause.
Wi-Fi, sound or accessories disappear
Check whether the issue began after a software update or only occurs with a particular device. Try a different known-working network or accessory where practical. Do not immediately reset network settings or reinstall drivers; those changes may remove saved connections or introduce new problems. Our connection troubleshooting section provides a safer starting path.
Where to verify a fix: Use Microsoft Windows Support for Windows 11 and Apple Mac Support for macOS. Steps vary by device model, account rights and software version. Keep a backup before reinstalling or erasing anything.
For a safer start, record the exact message you see and check which operating system version you use before changing settings. Our editorial policy explains how we approach troubleshooting.
