Practical iPhone checks

Before changing your iPhone settings

An iPhone issue is easier to narrow down when you know whether it affects one app, a network or the whole phone. Note your iOS version, what you were doing when the problem began and any message on screen. The following checks help you choose a sensible next step without immediately resetting your phone.

Wi-Fi or mobile data not working

Try opening a trusted website on a different connection and check whether other devices on your Wi-Fi have the same problem. If a mobile network issue affects only your iPhone, verify that cellular service is available and inspect the relevant connection settings before resetting them. A network settings reset removes saved connections; it should not be the first guess.

Charging is unreliable

Compare a compatible cable and adapter with a known-working power source. Check for visible cable damage and signs of overheating, moisture or swelling. Do not insert sharp objects into a charging port. If the device appears damaged or gets abnormally hot, stop charging and consult a qualified professional instead of repeatedly trying different power sources.

Notifications or apps behave differently

Check whether the problem is limited to one app. Notification permissions, Focus modes and individual app settings can all change which alerts appear. For app crashes, check for updates from the App Store. Before deleting or reinstalling an app, confirm that any unsynced data, drafts or authentication information will be recoverable.

For current steps, use Apple’s official iPhone guidance. If you need broader device help, visit Phones & Tablets or our Wi-Fi & Bluetooth page. These starting checks do not replace professional help for damaged hardware or account-security concerns.
