Android troubleshooting

Identify the phone and the problem first

Android menus vary between manufacturers, versions and account setups. A step for a Pixel may not appear in the same place on another phone. Before following a guide, note the manufacturer, model, Android version and whether the problem began after an app or system update.

An app has stopped or keeps closing

See if the problem occurs in one app or several. Check for an official update and review whether the app has permission to access what it needs. If you are considering clearing an app’s data, check what that action removes; it may sign you out or delete local files. Do not assume an uninstall will restore unsynced chats or photos.

Battery drain or storage warnings

Review which apps have been active and whether a recent update or heavy background task coincided with the change. Compare available space before deleting files. If battery swelling, unusual heat or physical damage is involved, stop using or charging the device and seek qualified support. Avoid installing unknown ‘battery optimizer’ apps as a shortcut.

A network or notification issue

Test whether the same Wi-Fi works on another device, then check whether the affected app or phone has notifications restricted. Android brands differ in background-activity options, and power-saving modes can affect app behavior. If you need Bluetooth pairing help, start by checking the accessory’s pairing mode and whether it is already connected elsewhere.

Check Android Help and the device manufacturer’s own documentation for model-specific steps. Our Apps & Software and connection guides give other starting points. Never share account verification codes with someone offering remote fixes.
