Everyday software first checks

Find out whether it is the app, account or device

Repeatedly reinstalling an app is rarely the best first move. First check whether the same account works in a browser or on another device, whether the app has a pending update, and whether a temporary service interruption could explain the symptom. The right next step depends on what you discover.

You cannot sign in

Separate a forgotten password from an app that will not load. If sign-in works on the provider’s official website but not in the app, the issue may be local to the app or device. Use official account-recovery options; do not share one-time codes or recovery links with anyone offering to fix the problem in a chat. For mailbox issues, visit our Email & Gmail Help section.

Messages or alerts are missing

Check whether the message exists on another device, then review notification permissions and the app’s own notification settings. A muted conversation, a scheduled quiet period or background restrictions can look like a delivery failure. For messaging apps, confirm your backup status before changing phones or reinstalling. Explore Messaging Apps for the relevant category.

A browser or app keeps crashing

Note the app version, device operating system and whether the problem follows one specific website or file. Check official updates and restart the affected app when safe to do so. Clearing browser cookies can sign you out; deleting an app can remove unsynced data. Do not erase local drafts just because a generic troubleshooting list says to reinstall.

Verify with the service itself: Official support pages, such as Gmail Help, are useful for account-specific instructions. An unexpected login prompt or security warning is a reason to check the destination carefully, not to enter credentials into an unfamiliar page. You can also suggest a software question for future coverage.

Before reinstalling an app, check whether your account, synced data or local drafts are backed up. Uninstalling can remove information stored only on the device.
