Smarter purchase decisions
A buying checklist that starts with your needs
A specification sheet tells you what a product has, not necessarily what you will enjoy using. Before comparing prices, list the tasks you actually do, the devices you already own and any cost or compatibility limits. Then use these questions to avoid paying for features that solve someone else’s problem.
Will it work with your existing setup?
Check required operating systems, ports, chargers, accessories and software subscriptions. A laptop might look powerful but lack a port you use daily; a phone may not support a feature in your region or with your carrier. If accessibility features or workplace software matter, verify support before buying rather than relying on a product photo.
What will you spend after checkout?
The advertised price is not always the total cost. Compare storage upgrades, paid software, replacement accessories, subscriptions, delivery charges and the possibility of future repairs. Look at update-support commitments where the manufacturer publishes them. Price and warranty conditions can differ across the US, UK and Europe, so review the seller’s terms for your location.
How strong is the recommendation?
Ask whether an article describes a firsthand test, a documented specification comparison or a mixture of sources. A short trial should not be presented as years of ownership. Check whether the writer explains drawbacks and who should avoid the product. Our Product Evaluation Policy sets out the evidence and transparency standards we aim to follow.
A simple final check: Before paying, confirm current specifications and compatibility on the manufacturer’s website, then check the seller’s return and warranty terms. Our Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure explains how commission-earning links would be labelled if used in future articles. An affiliate relationship is not a substitute for a useful comparison.
We distinguish product research from hands-on testing and explain the basis of any recommendation. See how we evaluate products and our advertising and affiliate disclosure.
