Windows 11 first checks

Before a Windows repair, collect the clues

If a Windows 11 PC suddenly becomes slow or displays an error, start by noting the exact message, the Windows version and the last change you made. These details distinguish a single application problem from a system-wide fault and help avoid unnecessary resets or third-party repair tools.

A Windows update fails

Check the update history for the KB number or error code and confirm whether there is enough free storage. An update that is not offered to your device may have compatibility restrictions. If the computer is managed by a workplace or school, updates may be controlled centrally. Use Microsoft’s current troubleshooting instructions before trying manual repair commands.

Slow startup or unexpected resource use

Open Task Manager and look at which applications and processes are using memory, disk or CPU. A short period of heavy activity after updating may be different from an ongoing slowdown. Review unfamiliar startup applications carefully, but do not delete drivers or system files. Back up documents before changing security or recovery settings.

Audio, camera or a connected device disappears

Check that the correct microphone, speaker or output device is selected in Windows settings. For a webcam, inspect app permissions before reinstalling drivers. If Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is affected, compare another accessory or network where possible. Do not download drivers from unrelated ‘driver updater’ websites.

Refer to Microsoft Windows Support for version-appropriate steps. Visit Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Fixes or Windows & Mac Updates for the related topic. A full system reset can remove apps or data, so treat it as a last resort.
