Computer release notes

Before updating Windows or macOS, check these three things

Operating-system updates can change security protections, compatibility or everyday settings. Some are routine, while others deserve more preparation. The fact that a release exists does not automatically mean every PC or Mac can install it today.

Compatibility and rollout status

Identify the exact OS release, affected device models and whether the update is being distributed gradually. Windows may use compatibility safeguards, and a Mac release may support only certain hardware. Check any published known-issue notes, especially if a critical printer, display, security tool or work application must remain available.

Backups and working software

Save important documents and create a recoverable backup before major upgrades. Verify that required drivers, peripherals and applications are compatible with the new version. On managed work computers, follow your IT team’s update window and policies. Do not force an upgrade simply because another user’s machine received it.

What changed and what requires action?

Read the provider’s release notes to distinguish fixed bugs from newly introduced features and known issues. Security fixes and optional interface changes should not be described as interchangeable. If the update fails, record the specific error before attempting recovery commands or reinstallations. Visit Windows 11 Help or Mac & MacBook Help for troubleshooting topics.
