Gmail Notifications Not Working on Android? 9 Checks to Try

Gmail notifications not working on Android? Check app notification permissions, account alerts, Sync Gmail, silent alerts and battery restrictions without losing data.

Gmail notifications not working on Android? Start by checking whether new emails are reaching your inbox without an alert, or whether the Gmail app is failing to download new messages at all. Those are different problems: a phone can receive mail but hide notifications, while disabled Gmail sync can prevent both inbox updates and notifications.

Quick answer: Open Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Gmail and allow alerts. Then open Gmail → Menu → Settings → your email account → Email notifications, choose the notification level you want, and make sure Sync Gmail is enabled. If mail only arrives after opening Gmail, investigate sync, connectivity and battery restrictions rather than sound settings.

Find out which problem you have in 60 seconds

Use another email account to send a new test message with a unique subject to the affected address. Check Gmail on the web or another connected device so you know the message actually arrived, then compare it with your Android phone. Avoid sending personal or sensitive information as a test.

Step 1: Allow Gmail notifications in Android settings

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app and search for App notifications, or go to Notifications → App notifications.
  2. Find and select Gmail. If your version of Android uses a different path, long-press the Gmail icon and open App info → Notifications.
  3. Turn on All Gmail notifications or Allow notifications, whichever your phone shows.
  4. If notification categories are available, also check the Mail or email category for the account you use. An individual category can be set to Silent even when the master switch is on.
  5. Send a fresh test email and check both the notification shade and lock screen.

Google documents these device-level controls in Control notifications on Android. Menu labels vary between Pixel, Samsung Galaxy and other Android manufacturers.

Step 2: Change notifications for the correct account inside Gmail

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the three-line Menu at the upper left, scroll down and choose Settings.
  3. Tap the specific email address missing alerts. If you have two accounts, repeat the process separately for each one.
  4. Under Notifications, tap Email notifications and select a level that includes the mail you want. Avoid None and remember that High priority only intentionally filters out some messages.
  5. Return to the inbox and have another account send a new test message.

Why this matters: Gmail’s default alerts generally focus on the Primary category. Google also documents separate account preferences, so enabling notifications in Android does not automatically override a Gmail account set to None or High priority only. For screenshots showing the current Gmail menu, open Google’s illustrated Gmail notification instructions—the page includes Google’s own settings animation. Don’t rely on an outdated third-party screenshot for your version.

Step 3: Verify that Sync Gmail is turned on

  1. In Gmail, return to Menu → Settings and select the affected email account.
  2. Scroll to Data usage and check Sync Gmail. Turn it on if it is off.
  3. Return to the inbox and swipe down from the top to refresh. Confirm whether the test message appears.
  4. If email still does not update, check the phone’s account sync settings for the same Google account; the path varies by Android version and device manufacturer.

Google explicitly says that when Sync Gmail is off, automatic new-mail updates and notifications are unavailable until you refresh manually. Its troubleshooting page also notes that syncing can take up to 15 minutes, sometimes longer on a device that has been inactive. See Fix Gmail app sync errors.

Step 4: Check why Gmail notifications are silent

  1. Expand the notification shade after a test mail. If the Gmail notification appears without sound, it may be a silent notification rather than a delivery failure.
  2. In Gmail → Menu → Settings → your account → Notification sounds, inspect the sound selected for Email. If the sound is None, select a sound you actually want to hear.
  3. On Android, open Gmail App info → Notifications. Where your device offers per-category sound controls, select the Mail category and confirm it is set to alert rather than silent.
  4. Open your phone’s Modes or Do Not Disturb controls and check whether Gmail is currently filtered. Scheduled bedtime or focus modes may suppress audible interruptions.
  5. Check the phone’s notification volume. A muted phone can still receive Gmail messages without making a sound.

Google’s current instructions distinguish Email and Chat and spaces notification sounds. Adjust the category relevant to regular email; don’t change chat settings expecting them to fix mail alerts. Google Gmail Help and Android Modes & Do Not Disturb Help.

Step 5: If notifications are delayed until you open Gmail, inspect connectivity and power limits

When the Gmail inbox catches up only after you launch the app, the issue is more likely to involve automatic sync or background activity than a missing notification sound.

  1. Verify that your internet connection works by opening a different website on Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  2. If Battery Saver or a strong manufacturer-specific power-saving mode is enabled, temporarily return to normal battery mode and test again. Battery Saver can restrict background activity.
  3. Look in your phone’s Settings → Apps → Gmail for battery or background-use controls, if your manufacturer provides them. Check whether Gmail is unusually restricted; don’t assume that a setting named Unrestricted is present or necessary on every phone.
  4. If you have Data Saver enabled, review Gmail’s background-data allowance according to your device manufacturer’s instructions. Background access may affect when Gmail can sync.
  5. Restart your Android phone and check with one fresh test message after Gmail has had time to sync.

Trade-off: Allowing more background activity can increase data usage and battery consumption. Avoid switching every application to unrestricted background use. Google’s Android battery guidance confirms that Battery Saver can limit background activity and delay some app functions.

Step 6: Fix mail that arrives for only one label or category

  1. Open Gmail → Menu → Settings → the affected account → Manage labels.
  2. Select the label you want to hear about, such as Important or a custom label.
  3. Under Sync messages, choose Last 30 days or All if label syncing was disabled.
  4. Turn on that label’s notification options, where offered, and test with a message that actually lands in that label.

Google says label notifications cannot be turned on for a label that is not synced. If you choose High priority only for the account, that selection can affect which label alerts arrive. Notifications for promotions or automatically filtered emails may therefore differ from the Primary inbox. Source: Change Gmail notifications on Android.

Step 7: Update the Gmail app and restart

  1. Open the Google Play Store, find Gmail, and install an available update from its official listing.
  2. Restart the phone. Then open Gmail and confirm you are signed in to the affected account.
  3. Recheck Sync Gmail and the notification settings; test again after the app has synchronized.

This is a reasonable later step if the notification and sync settings were already correct. An update can fix software bugs, but should not be described as a guaranteed solution to an account or device issue.

Step 8: Check Google Account storage if new emails are missing everywhere

If the test message doesn’t appear in Gmail on the web or on your Android phone, the underlying problem may be message delivery rather than Android notifications. Check spam, filters and your Google Account’s available storage. Google states that an account at its storage limit may be unable to send or receive email; incoming messages may be returned to the sender.

We have a separate illustrated guide for that case: Gmail storage full? Why emails stop arriving and how to fix it. Do not start deleting email just because notification alerts are off.

Step 9: Consider clearing Gmail app data only as a last resort

Google lists clearing Gmail app information among the last troubleshooting options, not the first. It can erase locally stored drafts, signatures, ringtones and other settings. Before considering it, ensure important drafts and unsent work are backed up or visible in Gmail on the web, confirm account access and try every non-destructive step above.

Because device menus vary and local data loss is possible, use Google’s official sync-repair instructions for the exact path and warnings. Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage, and don’t remove or re-add a Google Account casually if you might lose access.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Gmail notify me only after I open the Android app?

If mail is downloaded only when you open Gmail, confirm Sync Gmail is enabled and that background connectivity is not being restricted. Test the internet connection and battery settings before changing notification sounds.

Why am I receiving Gmail emails without notifications?

Android may have blocked Gmail notifications, the Gmail account may be set to None or High priority only, or a specific label may not be synchronized. Check both Android notifications and the per-account Gmail settings.

Why do Gmail notifications appear but make no sound?

The Gmail Mail notification category may be silent, the email notification sound may be set to None, or Do Not Disturb may be active. A visible notification is evidence of delivery to the notification area, not necessarily an audio failure.

Do I need to turn off battery optimization for Gmail?

Not automatically. First test the supported Gmail sync and notification settings. If Battery Saver or a manufacturer power restriction is delaying background activity, adjust only the Gmail-specific setting as supported on your device and note the potential battery-use trade-off.

Does clearing Gmail app storage erase emails from my Google Account?

Your mail stored on Google’s servers generally remains in the account, but clearing app data can erase locally stored drafts and customized settings. Google explicitly warns about losing certain local information. Verify important unsent work before taking that step.

Will Gmail notify me about Promotions and custom labels?

It depends on the inbox/category settings, the account’s notification level, and whether the relevant label is synchronized and enabled for notifications. Google’s default notifications focus on messages in Primary.
